Smudging As A Tool To Clear Your Space
Have you ever entered a room and immediately sensed a dark or chaotic energy? Maybe there were people complaining or some sort of gathering occurred that left negative vibes.
Space, and that includes the spaces we occupy, are filled with energy – even though we can’t see it. That energy is constantly changing in terms of rate of vibration or frequency.
The higher the vibration, the lighter the space will feel. The lower the vibration, the heavier or dense it will feel.
This goes for your personal space as well. As such, it’s important to remember that the lower or denser energy can actually get stuck in your personal field, as well as the spaces you work, visit, and live.
However, there are various practices and techniques you can use to clear that space if you’re feeling stuck, sluggish or uneasy. One such energy clearing practice is called smudging, and it might just be the medicine for you.
What Is Smudging?
Smudging is an ancient technique that uses smoke to purify a space. It is a ritual that includes burning herbs or sticks. Once these are smoldering, the smoke connects us to the place that is without words – the soul realm. Smudging has been used for centuries by native cultures to cleanse the energy of a space or to clear one’s personal energy field.
Listen to what Native American healer Grandmother Wapajea Walk on Water has to say about smudging:
“The goal of smudging is to make a place clear of lingering energy that is different from what you may be intending for that space. You want to prepare the space for ceremony, the way you would clean your house, cook, and decorate when your family comes for a holiday. We are welcoming Great Spirit, angels, and ancestors to come and share clean space with us as well.”
What Smudging Tool Is Right For You?
There are many different herbs that can be used for smudging. White sage, cedar and sweetgrass are common examples. Ultimately, it’s up to you to decide which feels right for you. White Sage and Palo Santo are two that I most commonly use.
White Sage
White Sage is used in Native American ceremonies to purify participants before entering a ceremony. It has an earthy smell and grounded, feminine feel. The Latin word for sage is salvia, which means “to heal”.
When sage is burned, it creates negative ions which neutralize positive ions, such as mold spores, pollen, viruses, and bacteria. It also helps you connect better to the spiritual realm and/or intuition.
Palo Santo
Palo Santo comes from a mystical tree in Peru. It’s “holy wood” that the Q’Ero people of Peru have used for many years to purify, bring protection and heal. The tree is holy to all the indigenous Shaman of the Andes and Amazon.
Palo Santo is only harvested when the trees have fallen to the ground, giving the live trees the respect they feel is necessary. It has a powerful, aromatic, masculine smell with hints of Frankincense, lemon and pine. I use palo santo daily to cleanse myself and my healing space before and after working with a client.
Clearing Your Space
I use White Sage and Palo Santo together when I do house clearings, as I like the compliment of masculine and feminine energies I feel when working with both.
How often you clear your place is a personal call. Pay attention to how you are feeling in your space and cleanse as necessary. As you go about smudging, invite the sacred smoke to do what it needs to do to clear all negative energies and bring in positivity.
You can also smudge objects, such as those things you bring into your home from the store or secondhand items. This can help clear any negative energy associated with it, giving you more peace of mind too.
Where To Find Smudge Sticks
Smudge sticks & Palo Santo can be found in alternative bookstores and natural food stores. If you are looking to buy online, two of my favorite shops are www.taosherb.com and www.shamansmarket.com
A note to anyone that is sensitive or has allergies to smoke. I make a smokeless smudge spray infused with crystals and healing essential oils including, palo santo, sage with hints of peppermint. This is just as effective as traditional smudge sticks and can be a great alternative in the workplace or shared space.
Conclusion
We live in a world that is created of energy. Even though we can’t see that energy with our physical eyes, it’s there. And, the type of energy can affect us personally, as well as our spaces. To rid personal and larger spaces of negative energy, get in the practice of smudging using your favorite type of smudge tools.
By regularly clearing your spaces, you’re inviting more positive, faster vibrating energy to come in. You’ll be able to tell the difference, enjoying more peace, clarity, intuition, and vibrancy.
